High Court Rules Against Political Spending Limits (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

If Nazis can march in America and protestors can burn the American flag, said the chief justice of the US Supreme Court yesterday, then surely the First Amendment also protects big money contributions in American politics.  And with that, the Roberts court tore another huge cap off American campaign finance controls.  If you’re rich enough, you can now pour millions directly into whatever political party coffers you please.  Supporters call it freedom.  Critics call it the further hijacking of American democracy.  This hour On Point:  the high court’s move on big money politics. / Tom Ashbrook

Jeremy Rifkin: "The Zero Marginal Cost Society: The Internet Of Things, The Collaborative Commons, And The Eclipse Of Capitalism" (Diane Rehm Show)

Capitalism has been the dominant economic system in the U.S. for centuries. But economist and social theorist Jeremy Rifkin says a battle is under way between capitalism and a new economic paradigm. It will be drawn out and hard fought. But he predicts that capitalism will inevitably lose, existing only at the edges of economic life. In its place will be a hybrid system based on the sharing of goods and services. Rifkin argues this is being brought about by advances in technology and communications that are dramatically lowering the cost of those goods and services. A discussion about how the Internet is radically transforming our economy and way of life.

‘Noah’ And The Great Flood (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

In children’s stories, the story of Noah and his ark is almost sweet and appealing.  All the animals, two by two, going for a boat ride with a nice bearded man in a robe.  Then there’s a rainbow.  In the Bible, it’s a good bit darker.  God looks around, finds his creation is wicked, and decides to wipe it out with a flood.  On the big screen with Russell Crowe, Noah’s story is full-on apocalyptic.  Dark and raging, with battle scenes and giants.  And a bitter struggle over whether to end all humanity forever.  This hour On Point:  we’re digging in to the Biblical story of Noah and the Great Flood. / Tom Ashbrook

Week In The News: Equal Pay, Sebelius Resigns, Ukraine, Civil Rights Act At 50 (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

Sebelius is out at HHS . More than seven million sign up for Obamacare. Her legacy? Uncertain. On Capitol Hill, the Equal Pay Act fails, again. The Ryan Budget makes it through a divided House. The Civil Rights Act turns 50. Jeb Bush talks immigration. Hillary Clinton dodges a shoe. At Fort Hood, President Obama offers comfort.  John Kerry warns Russia to back down on Ukraine.  Mass stabbing at a Pennsylvania High School.  Stephen Colbert lands a new gig. And the heartbleed computer nightmare.   This hour, On Point: the weekly news roundtable goes behind the headlines.
