The Economics Of Election 2016: GOP Debate

The economy was the advertised issue of the night. The contenders fought for time and appeal. The moderators took some heavy grief. Debate number three for the Republicans last night saw a good night for Marco Rubio, a tough night for Jeb Bush. Trump and Carson hanging in. Ted Cruz lashing out. Ohio governor John Kasich railing against “fantasy” from his competition on the debate stage. The big GOP message remained “cut government.” How, and where, and what to do on taxes and how to share the pie – all on the table. This hour On Point, the Republicans, back in debate.

Full Text of TPP Trade Deal Revealed -- and Critics Say It's Even Worse Than They Thought

The details are out on the the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and critics say the trade deal is worse than they feared. The TPP’s full text was released Thursday, weeks after the United States and 11 other Pacific Rim nations—a group representing 40 percent of the world’s economy—reached an agreement. Activists around the world have opposed the TPP, warning it will benefit corporations at the expense of health, the environment, free speech and labor rights. Congress now has 90 days to review the TPP before President Obama can ask for an up-or-down vote. We are joined by Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch and a leading TPP critic.

[Caretaker Lisa] Higdon says she started getting suspicious in 2013 when an institute representative began making frequent visits to Turner’s Brookhaven home.

Friday News Roundup – Domestic (Diane Rehm Show, 2015-11-06)

The U.S. economy adds 271,000 jobs in October. That strong showing increases the likelihood that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates by the end of the year. Bush denounces his son’s “Axis of Evil” speech. Marco Rubio hardens his opposition to president Obama’s immigration initiatives. Bernie Sanders takes a more aggressive tone against Hillary Clinton. And social conservatives win big in Tuesday’s off-year elections. A panel of journalists joins Diane for analysis of the week’s top national news stories.

A Florida public defender leads charge against racist cops targeting minorities in Broward County.

Many cases assigned to public defenders don't have a happy ending. That's because the majority of public defender offices are underfunded and overworked. Some have four times the recommended number of cases. One study showed only 21 percent of state public defender systems have enough attorneys to meet caseload guidelines. That's largely the result of insufficient budgets. That and other factors mean the poorest defendants often don't get adequate representation. Gideon versus Wainwright made sure that every person charged with a crime gets a lawyer. But it did nothing to truly balance the scales of justice in America. The Broward County Public Defender's office in Florida is trying to change that and bring about Justice for All. The office has taken on law enforcement and the State Attorney's office in an effort to expose what the public defender calls discrimination and racial profiling. It's a battle for justice that the public defender is fighting one case at a time

Confessions of a Walmart Hitman • BRAVE NEW FILMS

Former Walmart executive blows the whistle on Walmart's mistreatment of workers. He recounts how he would watch Associates sit in the break room during their lunch hour without eating because they couldn't afford food. Walmart banned management from offering Associates any money to buy lunch. Walmart's corporate philosophy is to "do more with less" -they want the associates to do more, while Walmart pays them less. Employees were required to work "off the clock" -and shaving minutes from worker's timecards was a common way to steal wages and keep labor costs under control. Employees would be fired for mere SUSPICION of discussing unionization. Workers were terminated for the slightest offenses to create a culture of fear. To Walmart, Associates are nothing more than disposable people. SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/1JUX3Xv WATCH THE FULL FILM FREE: http://bit.ly/walmart-movie

Putting Kids First: Sarah Levin and Ed Beck on Vaccine Laws (Point of Inquiry, 2015-10-12)

With misinformation about vaccines proliferating among certain groups in the U.S., diseases that had previously been thought eradicated are creeping back into American life. As far as the law is concerned, whether or not a parent chooses to put their own child at risk by denying them vaccinations remains, largely, their personal choice. But this hands-off attitude toward vaccinations, particularly among children, puts everyone else at risk.

Here to talk about the threat posed by the anti-vaccination movement, and what we can do to stop it, are Sarah Levin and Ed Beck. Sarah Levin is the Legislative Associate of the Secular Coalition and Ed Beck is the senior policy analyst for the Center For Inquiry’s Office of Public Policy. CFI is working with SCA to launch a new campaign called Put Kids First. For additional information about how you can help combat anti-vaccination laws in your area check out the campaign website, and visit CFI's Keep Health Care Safe and Secular website to learn more about the fight to keep religion and pseudoscience out of health policy.

"Right to Know" Amanda Knief on Atheists Talk Radio #332, October 11, 2015

In the United States many citizens have access to regulated and safe healthcare (though expensive!). Unfortunately, more and more Americans are finding their access to vital and available services limited by the religious beliefs of their providers. We may ostensibly live in a secular society, but we're finding that our healthcare system is become less and less so. From AtheistVoter.org:
Today, nearly 1 in 6 Americans is treated by a health care provider who is affiliated with more than 645 Catholic hospitals in the United States, according to the Catholic Health Association of the United States. All Catholic health care providers are encouraged to abide by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ethical and Religious Directives, which affects the types and direction of treatment that men and women receive for everything from birth control to vasectomies to cancer to end-of-life care.
American Atheists is working to secure a legal right for patients to know what limits are being placed on us by our providers. By introducing the Model Patient's Right to Know Act, they are hoping to create an environment in which we might be able to better understand our options when we're choosing healthcare. From the American Atheist press release of the proposed legislation:
The proposed legislation would require health care providers to simply provide a list of services they will not perform for religious reason to patients, potential patients, health insurers, and state and federal grant or subsidy programs. The health care providers and insurance issues would them be requied to make that information available online for potential patients.

Poll Finds Americans, Especially Millennials, Moving Away From Religion : The Two-Way : NPR

...Skepticism about religion is especially evident among young people. The Pew study found that barely a quarter of "millennials" (born between 1981 and 1996) attend church services on a weekly basis, compared with more than half of U.S. adults born before 1946. Only about 4 in 10 millennials say religion is important in their lives, compared with more than half of those who are older, including two-thirds of those born before 1946...

  • It's the religious people's fault. Who could or would want to have Kim Davis's god? Hers, Huckabee's and their ilk. They've turned religion into mental illness.
  • Evangelicals hijacked the voice of Christianity in America, meddled in social issues and politics trying to force their beliefs on others and permanently damaged Christianity's image for younger generations. Blame the born again evangelicals or maybe blame lies with the moderate mainstream for not speaking up against them.

Helping Others Out On The Edges (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

Larissa MacFarquhar doesn’t like the term “do-gooder,” but it’s the best she’s got for a certain type of person. Not your ordinary, well-intentioned civic-minded person who pitches in to help when needed. But those rarer people who wholly – maybe obsessively – devote themselves to a moral cause, at the expense of almost every other aspect of their lives. Think Gandhi or Mother Teresa, but not sainted. How Grown-Ups Deal With 'Microaggressions'

We used to call this "rudeness," "slights" or "ignorant remarks." Mostly, people ignored them. The elevation of microaggressions into a social phenomenon with a specific name and increasingly public redress marks a dramatic social change, and two sociologists, Bradley Campbell and Jason Manning, have a fascinating paper exploring what this shift looks like, and what it means. The Co-ops Collapse: How GOP & HMOs Undercut Obamacare's Nonprofit Option, Leaving 500K Uninsured

As the Obamacare open enrollment period begins, it’s the end for many healthcare co-ops, leaving hundreds of thousands of people scrambling to find coverage. The co-ops were founded to offer a cheaper alternative on insurance exchanges after Democrats stopped demanding a public option. But since going live three years ago, the co-ops have faced major cutbacks from the Republican-controlled Congress. Now the system is faltering, with at least eight health insurance co-ops shutting down. The co-op closures have left some 500,000 people without insurance—and a marketplace of fewer choices and higher prices. It’s the kind of scenario that advocates of a single-payer system warned about from the outset: With Obamacare relying on for-profit insurance companies to provide coverage, the market will find a way to squeeze out those who need it most. We are joined by three guests: physician, professor and single-payer advocate Dr. Steffie Woolhandler; Wendell Potter, a former insurance executive turned whistleblower; and Julia Hutchins, chief executive officer of Colorado HealthOP, a consumer-directed, nonprofit health cooperative in Colorado that was forced to shut down last month.

The biggest release of federal prisoners in US history is unfolding this month. By November 2, six thousand prisoners will be out through the gates, the first of more than 40,000 on the road to early release. Most are drug offenders whose sentences, under mandatory sentencing guidelines, now just look too long. Like overkill. And there is more sentencing reform coming. The US is a stark world leader in incarceration. By a very wide margin. Now there is bi-partisan support for doing something about it. But how much? And how fast?
