Why Be Rational? (Rationally Speaking 01)

Why is "speaking rationally" a worthwhile goal, anyway? It’s not self-evident, at least not to many people. Human beings certainly don’t seem made for it. Aristotle may have famously dubbed us "the rational animal," but cognitive science tells a different story, with plenty of evidence that our brains blithely flout logic all the time and are excellent at rationalizing our irrational decisions after the fact. Indeed, it is reasonable to ask why fight our irrational natures to begin with? After all, some argue that irrationality can make us happier, at least in certain situations. Then again, perhaps there is a problem with the whole idea of arguing for irrationality...

Coming Out Atheist (TheThinkingAtheist)

It's one thing to reject a belief in gods. It's another thing to actually broadcast that information to religious family, friends, employers, neighbors and even total strangers. In many instances, the consequences can be significant. Families divide. Friends disappear. Voices are raised. Accusations are made. In certain regions and cultures, the word "atheist" can get you hurt or killed. So what are some of the best tactics for "coming out" as a non-believer? In this show, we explore the subject, take your calls, and speak with Greta Christina about her new book, "Coming Out Atheist: How to Do it, How to Help Each Other, and Why?" http://freethoughtblogs.com/greta/2014/03/07/coming-out-atheist-ordering-info/

The international research team studied a group of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes -- a malignant blood condition which frequently develops into acute myeloid leukemia. The researchers say their findings offer conclusive evidence for the existence of cancer stem cells.

'He is protecting his skull with a thick cushion of meat.' "
Stephen Colbert ripped Karl Rove and the media for the absurd fabrication last week suggesting that Hillary Clinton has suffered brain damage because she wore sunglasses after she left the hospital. There were other symptoms of "strange behavior" as well, Colbert pointed out. During the Benghazi hearings, she showed a "mastery of facts, and an unshakable confidence, all while wearing glasses that are like orthopedic shoes for your face."

Why courts are allowing redefinitions of emergency contraception

"More than 100 new cases threaten to confuse the general population and stigmatize basic methods of contraception...

"There are two important things to know. First, the ACA does not mandate or provide coverage for abortions. Second, EC and the IUD do not cause abortions. A quick recap: The most common forms of EC – Plan B and Ella – can be taken after sex and prevent pregnancy primarily by delaying or inhibiting ovulation. (For those who are more visually inclined, here’s a great video). Multiple studies have shown that Plan B works by preventing ovulation, not by preventing a fertilized egg from attaching to the womb. (In Europe, the label for that drug was recently changed to reflect this research.) The copper IUD, which is most often used as a long-acting birth control method, can also be used as a form of emergency contraception and can prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg. Conservatives have seized on research that has shown that it might be possible for Ella and the IUD to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. That research, however, is not conclusive..."

How Michael Sam became the latest target of the Christian right’s persecution fantasy

"The religious right has many potent weapons in its arsenal—sanctimony, bigot-pandering, and dishonesty rank right up at the top—but lately, pretending to be victimized seems to top the list. We have a soundbite-driven, points-scoring political culture that resists deeper analysis of the issues, making it perfect for bad actors to muddy up the issues. All you do is accuse your opposition of doing what you, in fact, are actually doing. If you want to oppress people, claim you’re being oppressed. If you want to deprive people of their rights, whine about how your rights are supposedly under attack. The idea is to confuse audiences about who is actually oppressing who long enough that they give up actually bothering to learn the truth. Unfortunately, it can be devastatingly effective propaganda..."

Why The Senate’s Top Leader Came Out For A Constitutional Amendment To Reverse Citizens United
