A draft bill from the Republican-led House Committee on Science would force the US National Science Foundation to document how its basic science grants benefit the country. Many scientists object that this is tantamount to asking them to predict the future.
Proposed bill would require the National Science Foundation to
justify awards using criteria including economic competitiveness and
national defense...
