Reasonable Doubts Episode #116: The Outsider Test For Faith with guest John Loftus
Interview:
http://freethoughtblogs.com/reasonabledoubts/2013/06/21/episode-116-the-outsider-test-for-faith-with-guest-john-loftus/
Download MP3 and listen
How can one accept the Bible at face value but reject the Quran’s teachings? How can one accept Christian miracles as evidence but reject Hindu miracles? John Loftus, author of the Christian Delusion and God or Godless, joins us on the show to discuss the Outsider Test For Faith, which challenges believers to thoughtfully consider why they reject the claims of other religions and then apply the same critical standards to their own beliefs.
Also on the show, its the Gospel of Superman! Why has Hollywood decided to promote the latest superhero film specifically to evangelical churches? And for God Thinks Like You, can just thinking about Superman turn you into a hero? All that plus a polytheism that is , quite frankly, a little twisted.

Making Better End-Of-Life Care Decisions (Diane Rehm Show)
Interview:

http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2013-06-17/making-better-end-life-care-decisions
Most Americans say they want
to die at home, but 75 percent die in hospitals or nursing homes.
Hospitalization often means aggressive, high-cost treatment at the
expense of quality of life. And life-prolonging care accounts for 30
percent of total Medicare spending. Now, two Harvard doctors are making
movies that visually depict common forms of end-of life care in
hospitals. The short films show real patients receiving treatment such
as emergency CPR and feeding tubes. Clinical studies show that patients
who view these movies overwhelmingly opt out of costly, life-prolonging
treatment. Diane and her guests discuss how to make better end-of-life
decisions.
Health Insurance Exchanges (Diane Rehm Show)

http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2013-06-20/health-insurance-exchanges
Advocacy groups across the
country have launched major campaigns to promote President Barack
Obama's Affordable Care Act. The aim is to inform uninsured Americans
about health insurance exchanges and government subsidies -- and
persuade them to sign up. Open enrollment in the new programs begins
Oct. 1, 2013. It's estimated that more than 75 percent of uninsured
Americans are not aware of the changes ahead. A government report
released yesterday questioned whether the exchanges would be ready.
Critics of the Obama health law said the report confirmed their doubts.
Diane and guests talk about implementing the Affordable Care Act.
Education Standards And The Common Core (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
Interview:
http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/06/12/education-common-core
Have you heard of the Common Core? In 45 of 50 states, it’s coming. A new — and, for many states, tougher — set of standards and tests for assessing how American students are doing, from kindergarten right on through.
The idea is to standardize and raise the level of American education, aim it to prep for college and career, to compete globally, to put everyone to the same test.
Fans say it’s long overdue. Critics say it’s heavy-handed, it’s window dressing, it’s scary.
Up next On Point: We’re digging into the Common Core and what your kids are going to be expected to know.

Friday News Roundup - Domestic (Diane Rehm Show)

In a rare show of
bipartisanship, the U.S. Senate passed a comprehensive immigration
reform bill. It now moves to the House, where Republican leaders say
they plan to take up their own measure. The Supreme Court delivered
major victories to supporters of gay marriage and struck down the heart
of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Environmentalists reacted with some
optimism to President Obama's climate change plan. The Boston Marathon
bombing suspect was charged with murder and using a weapon of mass
destruction. And a Texas abortion bill failed to pass after a dramatic
filibuster. A panel of journalists joins Diane for analysis of the
week's top national news stories.
