Sounding The Alarm For Basic Science Research Funding (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
Interview:
http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/10/15/nobel-prize-research-funding
A big American haul of Nobel Prizes in science again last week. The United States, not alone but surely again the envy of the world on the Nobel stage. But when those Nobel winners turned to speak of their prizes, there was a remarkable consistency in their theme: America, wake up. The great basic science research that won us these prizes, they said, is not going on in the way that it did in the USA. It’s about leaner times. It’s about imagination. It’s about commitment. They’re saying change now or it won’t be us on that stage soon. Up next On Point: Nobel Prize winners on American science now.

Getting Treatment For Mental Illness (Diane Rehm Show)
Interview:

http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2013-10-15/getting-treatment-mental-illness
We spend $140 billion on
public mental health services in this country, but at any given time,
approximately half of all seriously mentally ill people receive no
treatment at all. Lack of public understanding is part of the problem:
many still believe severe mental illness is psychological rather than
biological. Federal programs conceived half a century ago to replace
much maligned state institutions were poorly conceived, never adequately
coordinated and, by all accounts, woefully inadequate. Today, family
members, police officers and the courts find themselves on the front
lines of this crisis. Diane and her guests discuss the challenges of
getting help for people with severe mental illness.
Week In The News: Shutdown, Senate Deal And ACA Struggles (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
Interview:
http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/10/18/week-in-the-news-shutdown-aca
Relief this week. But not too much. Imminent economic calamity averted. That’s big. Federal shutdown, over. That’s big, too. But the whole dance could start again, and soon. Americans wondering how much of this the country can take. We’ve got a transit strike in San Francisco. More travail in the Affordable Care Act rollout. A moving Medal of Honor winner who was very critical of the US Army. Nuclear talks with Iran. And felony charges against two girls for cyber-bullying in the death of a 12-year-old. Up next On Point: our weekly news roundtable goes behind the headlines.

Friday News Roundup - Domestic (Diane Rehm Show)

Following a deal to re-open
the government and raise the debt ceiling, a bi-partisan group of
lawmakers turned their focus to budget talks. The goal is to prevent
another government shutdown come Jan. 15, 2014. Technical problems
continue to plague the roll-out of the Affordable Care Act exchanges and
Republicans in Congress are calling for further investigation. The
White House nominated Jeh Johnson to head the Department of Homeland
Security. If confirmed, he would be the first African American to hold
the position. And Newark Mayor Cory Booker won a special election for
the U.S. Senate. Diane and her guests discuss the week in domestic news.
Friday News Roundup - International (Diane Rehm Show)

The world reacted with
relief to the last-minute deal to end the U.S. government shutdown and
raise the debt limit. But foreign officials warn Washington’s
credibility has been damaged, and more stable long-term management of
the nation’s finances is needed. A joint statement by Iranian and U.S.
officials described nuclear talks in Geneva as “substantive and forward
looking.” Chemical weapons inspectors in Syria said they’re on track to
meet a deadline for disabling equipment. And former NSA contractor
Edward Snowden said he protected secret documents from Russia and China.
