The largest-ever corporate merger to skip out on American tax obligations is now kaput.
Drug giant Pfizer is giving up on its corporate marriage to Ireland-based Allergan after an Obama administration policy change designed to prevent U.S. companies from fleeing taxes by moving their mailing address abroad. The $160 billion merger cemented last fall would have produced significant tax savings for Pfizer, at the expense of the American public.
The sudden collapse of the deal comes as news organizations the world over comb through the huge Panama Papers leak that exposes how individuals take similar advantage of the cracks in international tax law to conceal their personal holdings and business dealings with offshore shell companies. The leaks are bringing a burst of fresh attention to a long-standing problem: It’s very easy, and often legal, to slip out of the taxman’s grasp by way of clever accounting....

Louisiana’s Budget Crisis Spells Doomsday For Justice In New Orleans
Thanks to years of tax breaks for the wealthy and corporate kickbacks under former Gov. Bobby Jindal’s leadership, Louisiana is on the brink of economic collapse. If the state can’t find billions of dollars in revenue by Wednesday night, many basic services will be slashed into oblivion — including hospitals, universities, and resources to combat child abuse.
For a criminal justice system that’s already under-resourced and underfunded, the Doomsday scenario will also decimate indigent defense in the state. Public defenders are bracing for a 63 percent cut to their funding — meaning the 42 judicial districts will be given a paltry $12 million or so to operate. Offices across the state have already shut their doors, leaving Louisiana’s poor without constitutionally-mandated legal representation.
In Louisiana’s largest city, an overburdened defense system is expected to get much worse...

Obama Speaks Out On Panama Papers, Corporate Looters, And The Politicians Who Enable Them
With journalists and law enforcement officials still combing through a massive leak of documents to uncover the global networks of offshore companies the wealthy and powerful use to hide their activities, President Obama made a rare appearance at the daily White House briefing to call out some of the people who encourage and enable such deception.
After laying out new Treasury Department rules intended to discourage American companies from using international mergers to get out of paying their taxes, Obama connected the dots between such “inversion” mergers and the revelations of the Panama Papers. While the early stories to come out of the leak focus on foreign figures and sanctioned governments, he said, powerful Americans use the same elites-only financial clubhouse too...

Here’s How The One Percent Fares Under President Clinton Or President Trump
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s tax plan would raise trillions in revenue by increasing taxes on the wealthy, according to the Tax Policy Center’s new analysis.....
... That stands in stark contrast to Republican frontrunner Donald Trump’s plan. His proposal — which includes lowering the corporate tax rate and the capital gains rate, reducing the top tax rate paid by the highest income Americans, and ending taxes on inheritances altogether — would overwhelmingly help the rich....

Trump Either Doesn’t Understand His Own Tax Plan Or Is Egregiously Lying About It
On Sunday night during a “town hall” broadcast on Fox News, Greta Van Sustren asked Donald Trump about his tax plan. Specifically, she asked him if everyone in the country would get a tax break, “even the very rich.” This is how Trump responded:....

The bizarre optimism in Donald Trump’s theory of the economy
Trump appears to blend economic conspiracy theories with magical-thinking accounting: Stocks are a bubble inflated by "easy money"; government regulators have taken control of banks and choked off lending to everyone but the rich; the "real" unemployment rate is closer to 20 percent than 5 percent, and his crowd sizes prove it; cutting taxes and renegotiating the terms of trade will reinvigorate the economy and the middle class and somehow pay off the federal debt within eight years...

Fact-Check: Donald Trump Can't Release His Taxes While Being Audited?
Like other presidential candidates before him, Donald Trump is under pressure to release his tax returns. Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney (who faced tax disclosure issues of his own) even suggested this week that Trump was refusing to do so because they contain a "bombshell." At Thursday's Republican debate in Houston, Trump explained that he cannot release his returns because he is being audited by the Internal Revenue Service...

Pope Francis Calls for Ending Tax-Exempt Status of Churches That Don’t Help the Needy
“Some religious orders say ‘No, now that the convent is empty we are going to make a hotel and we can have guests, and support ourselves that way, or make money.’ Well, if that is what you want to do, then pay taxes! A religious school is tax-exempt because it is religious, but if it is functioning as a hotel, then it should pay taxes just like its neighbor. Otherwise it is not fair business.”

Welcome to Michigan: Don't Drink the Water
GOP, Democrats set to spar in Detroit and Flint.
It's hard to win a popularity contest when you're unpopular, but here the politicos come.
Michigan plays host this week to both the Democratic and Republican presidential roadshows.
What will the candidates find in the Great Lakes State? Failing schools. Crumbling roads. Poisoned water. And a people who have lost faith in their public officials.
They'll find America.
Some candidates will promise big government. Some will promise small government. But can they deliver an effective government?

Has Republican Austerity Destroyed Your City?
Republicans are obsessed with cutting budgets, but only the budgets that don’t deal with tax cuts, subsidies to profitable industries, and military spending. But on basic necessities, Republicans have no problem slashing those funds down to nothing. These cuts have left cities and states all over this country in dire straights.

"We Must & Can Aim High": Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich on Endorsing Bernie Sanders
We speak with Robert Reich, the former labor secretary under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1997, about his decision to formally endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for president on the Democratic ticket. "What worries me about other candidates, particularly Hillary Clinton, is that the message seems to be we cannot aim high, or we must not be ambitious, we must not try to be bold, because we can’t get there. That, to me, is exactly the wrong message," Reich says. "In terms of mobilizing Americans and organizing and getting the kind of response we need from Americans to push Congress, to change Congress, to get a government that is responsible for us, the message should be we must and can aim high. We can do it. And we’ve done it before in this country." This comes as four top economists and former advisers for Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have issued an open letter to Senator Sanders criticizing his economic platform. Reich is the author of many books, mostly recently, "Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few."
