Religion doesn’t necessarily influence Americans’ attitudes about science, but there are two big exceptions - The Washington Post
But Pew’s analysis finds that attitudes on issues like climate change are heavily driven by political partisanship and there is no independent effect of religious affiliation or frequency of church attendance on public attitudes. Political party identification and race and ethnicity are stronger predictors of views about climate change beliefs than religious identity or observance, the study finds.

Benghazi committee reflects a broader breakdown of the Republican Party
There are calls for the Benghazi committee to be disbanded. But that misses the larger point about what Thursday revealed. The hearing was one more manifestation of a party buffeted by conservatives who, after helping fuel two big midterm victories, are deeply unhappy that Washington has not changed overnight and as suspicious of their own leaders as they are angry with Obama and Clinton.

Justice Department: No criminal charges in IRS probe
"Our investigation uncovered substantial evidence of mismanagement, poor judgment and institutional inertia leading to the belief by many tax-exempt applicants that the IRS targeted them based on their political viewpoints,'' Assistant Attorney General Peter Kadzik said Friday in a notification letter to Congress.
"But poor management is not a crime. We found no evidence that that any IRS official acted based on political discriminatory, corrupt or other inappropriate motives that would support a criminal prosecution.''

The Mysteries of Parkinson’s, with Jon Palfreman (Point of Inquiry, 2015-10-05)
Brains, the means by which we scrutinize our world, are themselves inscrutable, and no more so than when things are going wrong. Just ask our guest this week, award winning medical journalist Jon Palfreman. After spending years of his life studying Parkinson’s in order to write the classic book, The Case of the Frozen Addicts, Palfreman was himself diagnosed with the very disease he built his career around understanding. Palfreman’s new book is called Brain Storms: The Race to Unlock the Mysteries of Parkinson’s Disease.
As modern medicine allows our bodies to live longer with each new generation, the search is on to find ways of preserving our brains from neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, diseases that drain much of the value from these lengthening lifespans. Palfreman gives insight into both our understanding of the disease, as well as the latest medical advancements and further points of study in our race to understand the brain.

Week In The News: Hillary And Benghazi, Biden Opts Out, Canada Votes (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
Eleven hours. That is a long time to do anything, let alone to grill and be grilled over Benghazi. But that was Hillary Clinton’s time in the hot seat. No bombshells. She survived. In the White House Rose Garden, this week, Vice President Joe Biden says he won’t run for President. Paul Ryan says he will stand for Speaker of the House. With a list of demands for Republican unity. Good luck with that, Congressman. We’ve got Assad in Moscow, Oprah with a slice of Weight Watchers, a mega-hurricane bound for Mexico. Ignoring U.S. Destabilization of Libya, GOP Benghazi Hearing Asks Clinton All the Wrong Questions
Former secretary of state and current Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton underwent a marathon day of testimony Thursday before the House Select Committee probing the 2012 attack in Libya, which killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. Throughout the hearing, Clinton defended her record on Benghazi in the face of Republican criticism. Republicans say Clinton ignored pre-attack warnings and mishandled its aftermath, even though seven previous congressional probes have found no wrongdoing. Clinton handled Republican questions with a calm demeanor, and afterward panel chair Trey Gowdy, Republican congressmember of South Carolina, admitted the hearing failed to turn up anything new. Melvin Goodman, former CIA and State Department analyst, says the Benghazi hearing has ignored the real issue for Clinton to address: the U.S. bombing of Libya that destabilized the country and set the stage for the fatal 2012 attack. "What was learned was irrelevant," Goodman says. "What was relevant, wasn’t discussed."

Obama uses veto for only fifth time, rejecting defense authorization bill
President Obama exercised his veto power Thursday for just the fifth time in his presidency, rejecting a defense authorization bill because of the way it would sidestep budget limitations for the military and because it would restrict the transfer of detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay.

The Hillary Hearing
The moment Hillary Clinton seemed to realize that her testimony Thursday before the House Select Committee on Benghazi was not going to be a big problem for her or for her campaign came about forty-five minutes in. When the hearing opened, she had regarded the chairman, Trey Gowdy, of South Carolina, with irritated skepticism. She looked as if she might say something rash, if not throw something, and perhaps she might have. Nearly three years ago, in a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Benghazi, she lashed out after having been asked many times about U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s comments on the Sunday talk shows about what had instigated the attack, on September 11, 2012, in which four Americans, including Chris Stevens, the Ambassador to Libya, died. “What difference, at this point, does it make?” Clinton demanded. Out of context, she sounded unmoved by the men’s deaths. Now, in the House hearing, it seemed to dawn on her that the proper response to her Republican interrogators was not outrage but pity...

The Milky Way: Crash Course Astronomy #37
Today we’re talking about our galactic neighborhood: The Milky Way. It’s a disk galaxy, a collection of dust, gas, and hundreds of billions of stars, with the Sun located about halfway out from the center. The disk has grand spiral patterns in it, formed by the traffic jams of stars and nebulae, where stars are born. The central region is shaped like a bar, and is mostly old, red stars. There’s also a halo surrounding us of old stars.

Ali Mohammed al-Nimr was arrested at the age of 17 and convicted of encouraging protests during the Arab Spring. He faces execution any day. Earlier this month, in response to mounting international pressure to release al-Nimr, the Saudi Embassy in London said, "the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia rejects any form of interference in its internal affairs and any impingement on its sovereignty or the independence and impartiality of its judiciary." Inside Overseas Tax Havens (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
If you’re rich and you don’t want to pay taxes, here’s a way to go. Drop that billion in a secret bank account abroad. It’s illegal, but there are plenty of people who will help you do it. And there are a lot of people who do it. My guest today, Gabriel Zucman, says there are now $7 trillion in personal wealth stashed in tax havens abroad. Seven trillion dollars. That is eight percent of the world’s private financial wealth, not counting yachts and jewels. And who pays the bills that those tax avoiders don’t? Well, you and me. “Right To Die” Becomes Law In California
California has just become the fifth state to legalize so-called “aid in dying.” Under the law, certain terminally ill California residents can elect to end their lives with the help of a doctor’s prescription. Following an emotionally-charged debate, Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill into law Monday, writing, “in the end, I was left to reflect on what I would want in the face of my own death.” For many supporters, this represents a pivotal moment for an issue that’s been gaining steam across the U.S. But for critics, California’s decision takes the national conversation about end-of-life options in the wrong direction. We hear both sides, and what the California law could mean for other states.

Concerns Over Russia’s Growing Military Presence In Syria (Diane Rehm Show)
Russia’s stepped-up military actions in Syria are complicating an already complex and lethal situation: The U.S. says Russia is sending both combat weapons and troops to western Syria. Russia claims its efforts are aimed at Islamic State militants, but most analysts believe propping up Syrian President Bashar Assad is Russia’s main goal. Tensions are also on the rise following Russia’s recent incursions into Turkish air space. Critics of President Barack Obama charge that Russia is stepping into a power vacuum created by U.S policy, but others hold out hope that coordination with Russia could be positive. We discuss Russia’s military role in Syria.

Analysis Of The First Democratic Presidential Debate Of The 2016 Race (Diane Rehm Show)
Five presidential candidates faced off last night in Las Vegas in the first Democratic debate. Frontrunner Hillary Clinton challenged Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on gun control, his plan to break up the banks, and on national security. Sanders responded, saying Clinton’s no-fly-zone in Syria was a bad idea and criticizing the former senator for her Iraq war vote. But the two found common ground on the issue of Hillary’s emails, which both agreed weren’t worth talking about. Diane and guests analyze last night’s event and what it could mean for the rest of the 2016 race.

Marion Nestle: “Soda Politics: Taking On Big Soda (And Winning)” (Diane Rehm Show)
Soda companies acknowledge that there is an obesity epidemic. Coca-cola and other beverage companies say they are doing their part to help to help solve the problem by funding research on health. But nutrition experts say these industry-funded researchers are erroneously saying exercise, not diet, is the key to maintaining a healthy weight. Health expert Marion Nestle says this industry funding blurs the line between philanthropy and marketing. In a new book, she argues that sugary-beverage companies are using a number of tactics to deflect criticism and mislead consumers.

Prison for Exxon Execs? Lawmakers Seek Probe for Hiding Knowledge of Climate Change PT. 1
For decades, Exxon has publicly questioned the science of global warming, contradicting internal findings by the company’s own scientists. Recent exposés by InsideClimate News and the Los Angeles Times reveal that Exxon concealed for decades its own conclusions that fossil fuels cause global warming, alter the climate and melt the Arctic. Exxon’s climate deception is now sparking calls for a federal probe similar to that which yielded a racketeering conviction of Big Tobacco for hiding the dangers of smoking. We are joined by Rep. Ted Lieu (D-California), who is calling for a Justice Department investigation of Exxon, as well as 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben, who was just arrested for a one-man protest shutting down his local Exxon gas station. "It’s difficult to think of a company that could have set back humanity for decades, and perhaps permanently," Rep. Lieu says. "But that’s what happened here."

How a $100M Facebook Donation for Neoliberal School Reform Sparked a Grassroots Uprising in Newark
Five years ago, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg donated $100 million to fix the trouble-plagued schools of Newark, New Jersey. Joining forces with Republican Gov. Chris Christie and then-Democratic Mayor Cory Booker, the effort was billed as a model for education reform across the nation. But the story of what followed emerges as a cautionary tale. Tens of millions were spent on hiring outside consultants and expanding charter schools, leading to public school closures, teacher layoffs and an overall decline in student performance. Parents, students, teachers and community members pushed back in a grassroots uprising to save their schools. We are joined by Dale Russakoff, who tells the story in her book, "The Prize: Who’s in Charge of America’s Schools?"
