Dinesh D'Souza Won't Apologize (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
Hot-button conservative Dinesh D’Souza is facing jail time this fall for campaign finance violations. Prison would take him off of Fox News and right wing radio for a while. But it won’t shut down D’Souza’s media presence in print and film. Bestselling books. The top grossing political documentary in history after Michael Moore’s “Farenheit 9/11.” Or his message: that America should stop apologizing for much of anything, from slavery right on down. This hour On Point: on his way to jail, Dinesh D’Souza on America and his audience out there. / Tom Ashbrook

"Grief Beyond Belief", Rebecca Hensler on Atheists Talk #271, June 8, 2014
In many ways, religious people "own" death and bereavement. They are
rarely so confident, or feel they are on such solid ground, as they are
when someone dies. But the comfort offered by believers is often the
last thing a grieving atheist needs. Talk of life after death or God's
plans offers little comfort to those who don't believe.
A few years ago, facing her own grief and the religious assumptions of her support group, Rebecca Hensler started Grief Beyond Belief, a support group for grieving non-believers. She joins us this Sunday to talk about the group and the challenges that deaths of our loved ones provide for atheists.

Janet Mock: Redefining Realness, Biology, Sex and Gender (Point of Inquiry)
This week POI welcomes bestselling author and trans rights activist, Janet Mock. Janet is the author of the new memoir Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love and So Much More, which recounts her emotional and physical transition from an infant sexed male at birth in Hawaii in 1983, to a young woman in New York City.
Some traditionalists accuse trans activists of playing games with language when they insist on the right of trans people to be called by their preferred pronouns and to be treated as real members of their self-identified gender. Traditionalists claim that anatomy at birth is the only "real" litmus test of gender, despite the empirical evidence calling that simplistic formulation into question.
Trans activists and allies are throwing the burden of proof back on the claimant. Why should the traditional ideology of gender take precedence over the lived experience of trans people?
It's great to be skeptical of ideas that are obviously dubious, like astrology or Bigfoot. But skeptics should also use their critical thinking skills to scrutinize divisions that seem intuitive and natural, especially in face of evidence that old social norms aren't working, or are causing unnecessary suffering. We still live in a culture that would rather discard trans people than grapple with the challenge they pose to the traditional conception of gender, but activists like Janet Mock are trying to change that.

What The Petunia Knows (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
We ooh and ahh over flowers, fields of green, begonias, sequoias,
even the humble petunia. But it’s easy to underestimate a plant. My
guest today says it’s no use playing them Mozart. They’re deaf as can
be. But by a whole lot of other measures, plants are wide awake and
really paying attention.
They can see when you come near them. Feel when they’re touched. Smell what’s going on around them, and respond. And they remember. In their own way, not entirely different from humans, they know what’s going on. Tobacco. Cherry. Willow. Chrysanthemum.

Austin Dacey - The U.N. and Defamation of Religions (Point of Inquiry)
Austin Dacey serves as a respresentative to the United Nations for CFI, and is also on the editorial staff of Skeptical Inquirer and Free Inquiry magazines. His writings have appeared in numerous publications including the New York Times and USA Today. His new book is The Secular Conscience: Why Belief Belongs in Public Life.
In this discussion with D.J. Grothe, Austin Dacey details his trip to Geneva, Switzerland on behalf of the Center for Inquiry's UN mission. He describes the UN lobbying efforts of the Center and its response to the United Nations Human Rights Council's resolution "Combatting the Defamation of Religions." He explains that despite legitimate concerns about stereotyping Muslims or racial profiling, this resolution equates any criticism or satire of religious beliefs with bigotry. He contrasts Europe's position on free speech with the United States' and how it is used by Islamic countries to justify their blasphemy laws, which often carry mandatory sentences of death or life in prison. He talks about how the Organization of the Islamic Conference at the United Nations aims to build into international human rights such legal standards that actually outlaw offensive speech against religions. And he argues that what should be protected under international human rights laws are individuals, and not ideas — that persons should be protected from harm and discrimination, as opposed to ideologies being protected from being criticized or satirized.

Understanding the Deadly Ebola Virus (Diane Rehm Show)
The latest Ebola outbreak is
being called the worst in history. The virus has killed nearly 700
people since March in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. The president
of Sierra Leone has declared a public health emergency, and Liberia’s
government is putting communities on quarantine. In the past week, the
disease claimed Sierra Leone’s top Ebola doctor and the first American
to die in this outbreak. While experts say a U.S. epidemic is unlikely,
international concern is growing as the disease shows no signs of
slowing its spread. Understanding the deadly Ebola virus, and the
international effort to contain it.
Interview:
Attorney Ken Feinberg On Claims Against GM (Diane Rehm Show)
CEO Mary Barra says GM is
committed to doing the right thing for the families of people killed and
those injured because of faulty ignition switches. Defective switches
were installed in approximately 2.6 million cars. GM has hired mediator
and attorney Ken Feinberg to evaluate claims and make compensation
offers. The individual pay-outs will likely range from a few thousand
dollars into the millions. Ken Feinberg, who previously lead the 9/11
victim compensation fund and several other high profile compensation
efforts, joins Diane to talk about how he’ll be evaluating claims
against GM and what families with losses can expect.
Singer Linda Ronstadt on Her Life in Music (Diane Rehm Show)
Growing up on a ranch
outside Tuscon, Arizona, Linda Ronstadt always knew she wanted to be a
singer. Her musical family played and listened to a wide range of
styles, including opera, classical and Mexican folk music. Ronstadt
landed her first recording contract as a teenager and in 1974, released
“Heart Like a Wheel,” a mix of oldies covers and contemporary songs like
“You’re No Good” and “When Will I Be Loved.” The album hit number one
and has never been out of print in 40 years. Ronstadt went on to sell
more than 100 million records. But last year, she announced that a
Parkinson’s diagnosis had forced her to stop singing. Diane talks with
Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Linda Ronstadt on her career in music and
her life today.
Interview:
John Dean: "The Nixon Defense: What He Knew and When He Knew It" (Diane Rehm Show)
As the 40th anniversary of
President Richard Nixon’s resignation approaches, you may think we have
learned all there is to know about Watergate. But a key member of
Nixon’s White House would disagree. John Dean says he now understands
more about Watergate than when he played a central role in the scandal
and its resolution. Dean has listened to thousands of hours of Nixon’s
secret Oval Office tapes -- many of which he says historians have
overlooked. And he’s found a few surprises. Former White House counsel
John Dean talks with guest host Susan Page about what he now believes
the president knew and when he knew it.
Interview:
New Efforts To Address The Child Migrant Crisis (Diane Rehm Show)
In a meeting last week
President Barack Obama told the presidents of Honduras, El Salvador and
Guatemala that many of the children from these countries who have turned
themselves into U.S. border agents will need to be sent home. Since
last October, approximately 57,000 children from Central America have
come to the U.S. With Congress deadlocked on ways to address the
current child migration crisis and the larger issue of what to do about
the 11 million people in this country without legal authorization, Obama
has vowed to fix much of our immigration system on his own. Please join
us to discuss next steps for immigration reform.
Interview:
Transgender in America: Gender Identity and the Struggle for Civil Rights (Diane Rehm Show)
Throughout history, there
have always been people who defied gender norms. In the
nineteen-fifties, Americans met Christine Jorgensen, a soldier who was
born a man but was determined to live her life as a woman. In the
decades that followed, a transformation in understanding and defining
transgender people has taken place. Last year, psychiatry’s diagnostic
manual replaced gender identity disorder with gender dysphoria. Medicare
now covers sex-change surgery. And a new California law requires
schools to allow students to use facilities and join sports teams that
match their gender identity. Understanding transgender people and their
struggle for civil rights and acceptance in American society.
Interview:
New Ways of Treating Alcoholism (Diane Rehm Show)
For more than 80 years, 12-
step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous have helped millions give up
drinking for good. But today, more and more experts are calling for a
change in how doctors and specialists approach the treatment of alcohol
addiction. They say for some alcoholics, the cold-turkey just isn’t the
answer. Many programs now advocate lifelong moderate drinking in
combination with other treatments. At the same time, scientists are hot
on the trail of brand-new drugs that could help those dependent on
drinking. Rethinking the abstinence-only approach and a look at the
changing perspectives on the treatment of alcohol addiction.

Israel Intentionally Killing Civilians As Numbers Climb
"As Israel showed signs of scaling back its ground offensive in Gaza, its war from the skies continued Sunday, as an airstrike outside a U.N. school in southern Gaza killed at least 10 people. The bloodshed sparked some of the harshest U.S. criticism of Israel since the war began.
Capt. Eytan Buchman, a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, said the targets of the attack in the border city of Rafah were three Palestinian militants riding past the school on a motorcycle. “We identified a successful hit on the target,” Buchman said. “We definitely don’t target civilians or schools.”
But according to eyewitnesses and U.N. officials, an Israeli missile struck just outside the gates of the school. About 3,000 Palestinians were seeking refuge at the facility, and a crowd of civilians had gathered outside — children buying ice cream from a sidewalk vendor, and men and women purchasing food or cigarettes, witnesses said.
