Week In The News: Default, Defiance And The Nobel Prize (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

Interview:
http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/10/11/week-news-oct-11

Maybe a breakthrough this week, maybe not, on shutdown pain, default fever and Washington’s wild dance on the razor’s edge.  This country has seen politics of a strange order.  Now the talk is of a six-week time-out to negotiate.  But it’s still not clear exactly how and if that will happen.  Republicans, looking at devastating public opinion polls on their role.  The White House, unmoved and dangerously close to economic crisis.  Now we’ll see.  We’ve got Nobel prizes, US terror raids, Janet Yellen – first woman to helm the Fed.  Up next On Point:  our weekly news roundtable goes behind the headlines.

Will Obama Cut A Disastrous Deal With Boehner?

Why The Religious Right Doesn't Fear Financial Collapse

Christian delusions are driving the GOP insane

"Why aren't Republicans more frightened of a shutdown and a default? Part of the reason is magical thinking..."

"The Tea Party is actually driven primarily by fundamentalist Christians whose penchant for magical thinking and belief that they’re being guided by divine forces makes it tough for them to see the real world as it is...  it becomes evident that the “Tea Party” is just a new name for the same old white fundamentalists who would rather burn this country to the ground than share it with everyone else...

"It’s hard for the Christian fundamentalists who run the Republican Party now to worry about the serious economic danger they’re putting the world in, because they are swept up in worrying that President Obama is an agent of the devil and that the world is on the verge of mayhem and apocalypse if they don’t “stop” him somehow, presumably be derailing the Affordable Care Act....

"In other words, the Christian right has worked itself into a frenzy of believing that if this health care law is implemented fully, then we are, in fact, facing down either the end of American Christianity itself or quite possibly the end times themselves.... Average global temperatures are creeping up, but the majority of Christian conservatives are too worried about the supposed existential threats of abortion and gay rights to care..."

Inequality And American Democracy (Tom Ashbrook, On Point, before a live audience)

Interview:
http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/10/04/inequality-and-american-democracy

Americans, in general, have a notably open attitude toward inequality.  A bunch of those big fortunes came from big innovation.  Big innovation has historically driven the American economy.  A lot of Americans hope to strike it big themselves one day.  But lately, American inequality has moved into territory so stark that it tests assumptions, even tests our democracy.  When the poor are poor, the middle class is falling, and the rich are running the table, driving so much politics, does democracy still work as it should?  Up next in a special edition of On Point:  Democracy and America’s new inequality.

Richard Dawkins: "An Appetite For Wonder" (Diane Rehm Show)

Interview:
http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2013-09-24/richard-dawkins-appetite-wonder

British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins was catapulted to fame in 1976 with his first book, “The Selfish Gene.” It revolutionized Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution with the idea that genes are the keys to natural selection. Dawkins was the first professor for public understanding of science at Oxford University. And he is one of the world’s most outspoken atheists, author of “The God Delusion.” His latest book is the first volume of a two-part memoir titled “An Appetite for Wonder: The Making of a Scientist.” It covers his childhood in Africa through his mid-30s.

A Preview Of The U.S. Supreme Court's Fall Term (Diane Rehm Show)

Interview:
http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2013-10-07/preview-us-supreme-courts-fall-term

The federal government remains partially shut down, but the U.S. Supreme Court's nine justices are back at work. Today is the first day of their new term. They have agreed to hear more than 50 cases, some of which address issues that have placed social liberals and conservatives in sharply opposing camps, such as on abortion protests and the separation of church and state. Another is the first major campaign finance case since Citizens United in 2010. Once again the outcome of a number of cases could depend on Justice Kennedy. Last year his vote tipped more five-to-four decisions than any other justice. Diane and her guests talk about some of the key issues before the nation's highest court this fall.

Rationing In Our Future? (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

Interview:
http://onpoint.wbur.org/2013/05/13/rationing-in-our-future

The news on Friday:  an ominous new milestone in global warming, as a key carbon dioxide measure in the atmosphere topped heights not seen on earth in millions of years.

My guest today, plant breeder Stan cox, sees more difficult climate change coming at us than we are anywhere near ready to handle.  One way or another, it’s going to take rationing to get along, he says.  Rationing.  The dread word.  On a big scale.  To survive.  We’ll hear his argument, and a pushback prediction of abundance.

This hour, On Point:  Stan Cox argues for all kinds of rationing, to live.
