The U.S. Has A Mass Shooting Epidemic, But No Government Database On Gun Violence (Terry Gross, Fresh Air)

"I found a couple of perfunctory timelines that highlighted a couple of major attacks over the years, but that was it," Follman explains to Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "My response to that was just to think, 'This is crazy. How could there not be more information on this?' "

Latest Anti-LGBT 'Religious Freedom' Bill Filed In New Mexico | ThinkProgress

Republican state Reps. David Gallegos and Nora Espinoza filed HB55 on Thursday, a bill “relating to religious freedom.” New Mexico already has a “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” (RFRA), but the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled unanimously in 2013 that it did not justify anti-gay discrimination. Gallegos and Espinoza’s bill seeks to rewrite RFRA in the same problematic ways proposed earlier this year in Indiana — meticulously redefining terminology to expand its scope and creating new exemptions...

The New Face Of Big Money Politics (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

A GOP debate last night, and we will look at it. Immigration The economy. What it means to be a conservative. To be Ben Carson. But there’s more going on than what’s on the stage. It’s what’s in the bank. In campaign coffers and super PACs. Millions. Hundreds of millions. Money is not everything this time out. Bernie Sanders does not have a super PAC. Neither does Trump. Of course, he’s a billionaire. Jeb Bush has a heap of dough and he’s trailing. And yet money keeps talking, and in new ways. This hour On Point, a check-up on money and super PACs in the 2016 campaign. — Tom Ashbrook

The Best Books Of 2015 (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

Every December we bring in book readers and sellers and critics and ask them to share their favorite books of the year. Some years there is lots of overlap on those lists. Some years, they’re all over the place. This is one of those sprawling years. Look around. Ta-Nehisis Coates makes lots of lists with “Between the World and Me.” Elena Ferrante is up there. Helen Macdonald, with “H is for Hawk.” Then it’s a free-for-all. But a rich free-for-all. Full of great reads. This hour, On Point, we put our net in the river for the best books of 2015. And it’s a good catch. Stay tuned. — Tom Ashbrook

Mexico’s Drug Policy in Flux, with Sylvia Longmire (Point of Inquiry)

s smoking pot a fundamental human right? On Wednesday, November 4th Mexico’s Supreme Court ruled that four individuals involved in a private cannabis club have the constitutional right to grow, sell, and smoke cannabis based on “the right to the free development of one’s personality.” The ruling was limited to the specific individuals who brought the suit, but it introduces a host of questions about what might happen if the trend toward broader marijuana legalization continues in Mexico.

Here to talk about the current political climate as it relates to drugs in Mexico is journalist and intelligence analyst Sylvia Longmire. Longmire specializes in Mexico’s drug war, and provides valuable insight not only into this latest development, but also the particular quirks of the Mexican legal system, and the potential repercussions of Mexican drug legalization on cartels, the illegal drug trade, and drug policies in the U.S.

Former commissioners tell Congress, ‘The IRS is stretched to the breaking point,’ so stop slashing its budget - The Washington Post

“Over the last 50 years none of us has ever witnessed anything like what has happened to the IRS appropriations over the last five years and the impact these reductions are having on our tax system,” wrote the former commissioners, who served in the Kennedy, Johnson, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush administrations. “It is clear to each of us that the [reductions] over the last five years materially and adversely affect the ability of the IRS to assist taxpayers who are trying to comply with their tax obligations, as well as the ability of of the IRS to detect and deter taxpayers who have not complied with their tax obligations.”

Legal Battles Over Parenting And Adoption Rights For Same-Sex Couples (Diane Rehm Show)

Last month a judge in Utah ordered a lesbian couple to give up their foster daughter to heterosexual parents. The order was reversed. But the decision highlighted a lack of parenting and adoption protections for same-sex couples. Although the Supreme Court affirmed the right to same-sex marriage nationally in June, many states have not changed their parenting rights policies. Another Year, Another Round of Attacks on Contraception Coverage

Congress passed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, guaranteeing for the first time ever that most employer-provided health care insurance plans could no longer discriminate in coverage on the basis of gender. ""Why don't you shut the fuck up you limey bastard?"

For those that can't be arsed to watch the video. Two questions for those in the pro-gun ownership lobby:

1) Why is "you can't take away our guns as we have a constitutional/2nd amendment right to them" a reasonable response to calls to ban such guns? Is there something that bans amendments being amended?

2) Would your position change if a magic wand could be waved that removed all guns, including off the "ne'er do well's" all in one go?

That is the video in a nutshell, yet I still managed to drone on for over ten minutes!"

Race On Campus, From Missouri To Yale And Beyond (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)

Campus turmoil in the heart of Missouri in the last week and more. And yesterday, the president of the University of Missouri system, resigning in a hail of protest over race issues and racism. A hunger strike in the heart of the flagship campus. Black students saying “no more” to racist taunts and a sense of second-class status. Players on the campus football team threatening to boycott this week’s Division I game. And boom, there is change at the top. It’s not the only campus in turmoil over race issues. The Koch-Like Family You’ve Never Heard Of Influencing State Legislatures | Political Research Associates

The DeVos family—Michigan-based builders of the Amway fortune—is one of the most influential families in conservative U.S. politics. Their agenda includes many items on the Corporate and Christian Right’s wish lists, including so-called “right to work” laws that weaken unions, discriminatory Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) bills, and education privatization (including pushing school vouchers that transfer public dollars to private religious coffers). Although some of their higher-profile activities such as Dick DeVos’ failed 2006 race for Michigan governor and Richard DeVos´ ownership of the Orlando Magic basketball team are covered in the press, their political spending has gotten far less attention. This year 435 seats will be contested in the House of Representatives, 35 in the Senate and 13 gubernatorial races will take place alongside local and county elections; therefore it is critically important for the country to see and debate the influence that rich families like the DeVoses are wielding in politics...

Should College Students be Allowed to Take Smart Drugs? (John Donvan, Intelligence Squared U.S.)

If you could take a pill that would help you study and get better grades, would you? Off-label use of “smart drugs” – pharmaceuticals meant to treat disorders like ADHD, narcolepsy, and Alzheimer’s – are becoming increasingly popular among college students hoping to get ahead, by helping them to stay focused and alert for longer periods of time. But is this cheating? Should their use as cognitive enhancers be approved by the FDA, the medical community, and society at large? Do the benefits outweigh the risks?
