A Christian Nation? Since When? (The New York Times By KEVIN M. KRUSE)
"...Back in the 1930s, business leaders found themselves on the defensive. Their public prestige had plummeted with the Great Crash; their private businesses were under attack by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal from above and labor from below. To regain the upper hand, corporate leaders fought back on all fronts... But nothing worked particularly well until they began an inspired public relations offensive that cast capitalism as the handmaiden of Christianity..."

Reverend Bob Ripley was a minister for over 30 years, with 15 of those years as Senior Minister at Metropolitan United Church, one of the most prominent churches of the United Church of Canada. He wrote a syndicated column discussing religion for 25 years. In his September 26, 2014 column on LFPress, he announced to the world that he no longer believed in God. He's releasing a book which chronicles his journey, titled "Life Beyond Belief: a Preacher's Deconversion." Homeless LGBTQ Youth: Stories And Solutions (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
It’s a troubling statistic. Up to forty percent of the nation’s homeless youth are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer. Many of them of them kicked out, disowned by families who won’t accept who they are. They find themselves rejected, living in the shadows, with few places to turn for shelter and emotional support . Leaders in the LGBTQ movement are calling for a stepped up government and private support for these kids. This hour On Point: the heartbreaking stories and national crisis facing LGBTQ teenagers living on the streets.

Battling To Save The Endangered Gorillas Of 'Virunga' (Tom Ashbrook, On Point)
“Virunga” is an astonishing new documentary about corruption, compassion, and the imperiled gorillas and people of the Congo . The film is named after a national park in the Congo, where some of the world’s last mountain gorillas live. It’s the story of an oil company and local rebels trying to control their land and fearless Congolese park rangers, an intrepid investigative journalist and soft-spoken Belgian warden fighting to protect it. This hour on point, “Virunga” and the gorillas of the Congo. – Jessica Yellin

Dinesh D’Souza’s Ex-Wife Wipes The Smile Off His Convicted Face
"The conservative author and documentary filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza was spared prison time on Tuesday after pleading guilty earlier this year to violating federal campaign finance laws.
Judge Richard M. Berman of Federal District Court in Manhattan sentenced Mr. D’Souza to five years of probation — including eight months living under supervision in a “community confinement center” in San Diego — and a $30,000 fine. The sentencing brought to a close a high-profile legal battle that began with Mr. D’Souza’s indictment in January on charges that he illegally used straw donors to contribute to a Republican Senate candidate in New York in 2012.
Mr. D’Souza, who has accused President Obama of carrying out the “anticolonial” agenda of his father, a Kenyan economist, initially argued that he had been singled out for prosecution because of his politics. But on the morning in May when he was scheduled to go on trial, he pleaded guilty and expressed remorse to the court for his conduct."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Why did the WSJ use years-old data to attack Social Security disability? - LA Times
"Put it all together, and what you get is an op-ed that appears to be based on statistics but whose import is political. Its implicit theme seems to be that disability appeals are suspect by nature, and judges who approve more than the average must be up to no good. As we've written before, this is a variation on ancient conservative attacks on the "undeserving poor."
