Bishop Spong returns to TDT for an extended interview about his final
book, "Eternal Life: A New Vision." It is the culmination of his 79
years of passionate curiosity about the world, and his journey beyond
religion, and beyond heaven and hell. Is there life after death? Can a
skeptic accept this definition? Find out. Surely a conversation to spark
thought.
During this interview, Spong explains his view of the history of religion and why he thinks we have outgrown religion. For one thing, religion has been maintained through the ages as a way for rulers to control the masses, threatening them with eternal punishment on the one hand, and encouraging to patiently tolerate earthly injustice for a greater reward in the next life. He cites Conservative uses of religion in the U.S. today to encourage poor people to accept inequality.
