Should We Mock Religion? (The Thinking Atheist)

The late Christopher Hitchens once said that "Mockery of religion is one of the most essential things...one of the beginnings of the human emancipation is the ability to laugh at authority.  It's indispensable."   But does the mockery of religious belief close minds (and doors) as skeptics attempt to promote rationalism and disabuse superstitious people of their faiths (and is that even a goal)?  Should the ridiculous be ridiculed, or should we find other methods for exposing the cracks in religious foundations?
